If you don't know much about Jhumri Telaiya, people will tell you that it's an Imaginary Place just like "Malgudi" which was an imaginary place in the story of famous Indian Writer "R.K Naryan". I am also from Jhumri Telaiya but now living in Delhi. People in Delhi still believe that it's an imaginary city so i decided to write about the truth.
It's not only few people who believe that it's just an imaginary name but so many people across this world also believes the same which is obviously not the truth. It would be my pleasure to inform you that Jhumri Telaiya is a Real city which is present in the district of Koderma(Jharkhand state), India. It is situated in Damodar Valley. The name“Jhumri Telaiya” is a combination of two small nearby villages called Jhumri and Telaiya. Thus you can say that, this city is the combination of these two small villages.
How the city has got the name “Jhumri Telaiya”?
In beginning of this post, I informed you that “Jhumri” and “Telaiya” are small villages. The name Jhumri has been given due to the local folk dance “Jhumri”. Another word “Jhuri” is also important which means “bush”.
It would be interesting for you to know that the hindi meaning of “Telaiya” is “Small Lake”. There is no lake in this city but you can consider “Telaiya Dam” as a like which is undoubtedly the oldest DAM of india.

Jhumri Telaiya was once a major mica mining centre. While laying a railroad through Koderma in 1890s, the British first discovered vast mica deposits in the region. Mining activities started soon after and many mining houses were established. CH Private Ltd. of Chatu Ram Bhadani and Horil Ram Bhadani. Before CH, there was another major company controlled by the father and son duo of Ramananda and Sitaram Shah
Jhumri Telaiya was originally a part of Bihar state. After the division of Bihar, it became the territory of Jharkhand state in 2000.At that time, it's district was "Hazaribag". Later on, it became a part of koderma district on 10th April 1994.
Why Jhumri Telaiya was Famous in History?
- Jhumri Telaiya was always a known name for “Mica Mining”. At that time, Most of the Mica were exported to USSR.
- Till late 1960s, Mercedes and Porsche cars, and thoroughbreds from Arabia used to be common in Jhumri Taliya.
- The city once boasted of most number of phone connections and phone calls made in India
- When Television and FM radio was not a part of indian technology, Vividh bharti(a nationally broadcast radio service) was extremely popular in both rural and urban areas. It played a major role in Popularizing “Jhumri Telaiya”. According to records, "Jhumri Telaiya" was known for sending largest number of request for Songs. Due to large number of such requests, many started thinking that the name "Jhumri Telaiya" is the creation of Vividh Bharti Team for the entertainment.
- Bollywood also played minor role in popularizing "Jhumri Telaiya" by using this name in various film songs and dialogues.
- Jhumri telaiya was also famous for a sweet named “Kalakand”.
Geographical Existance of Jhumri Telaiya
Jhumri Telaiya is situated in Koderma district. It’s pin code is 825409. It’s a part of Damodar River Valley. It has al average elevation of 1,257 ft. The distance of Koderma and telaiya is almost 8 km. Telaiya Dam is near to this city which is an important tourist place.
